David Bower

Mechanical Engineer

David studied Product Design before joining Ferranti Electronics as a Trainee Mechanical Draughtsman, designing semi-automatic machinery to produce and test semi-conductors.  He went on to work in Defence designing electrical operator consoles for strike craft then machinery for general industry in South Africa.

In the UK David has worked on Mechanical Design and Systems or Project Engineering in various industries including Telecoms (Alcatel), Defence (Thales, GDUK, Atlas), Aerospace (GE, Boeing),  Robotics (GE) and Vacuum Abatement (Edwards).  He thrives on new challenges and considers his greatest enjoyment to be finding solutions to troublesome problems and coming up with results that end up looking obvious, for instance combining two or three functions together into a single sub-assembly.

As a youngster, he took apart clocks, radios, tape recorders etc. anything technical, to see how they worked, but failed to reassemble them. His best upset was creating a two-pole electric motor with his Meccano set at ten years old and connecting it to the house mains. He somehow survived, but the motor didnt!  These days David prefers to perform FMEAs and HAZOPs first!
